When Depression Takes Over: A Path Back to Energy, Connection, and Yourself
Depression doesn’t always feel like sadness.
Sometimes it feels like being homesick… even when you’re already home.
Sometimes it looks like lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to convince yourself to get up.
Or standing in your kitchen, knowing you need groceries… and having to psych yourself up just to walk out the door.
It can feel like everything takes effort.
Like your body is heavy.
Like your mind is foggy or flat.
And maybe one of the hardest parts…
The way you start to talk to yourself.
“Why can’t I just get up?”
“What’s wrong with me?”
“Why am I like this?”
For many people, depression isn’t just heavy… it’s layered with shame.
A sense that you should be doing better.
A quiet belief that maybe you don’t deserve to feel better.
That part often goes unspoken. But it matters.
For some people, this has been there for years.
For others, it started after something changed… grief, loss, trauma, becoming a parent, burnout, or a shift in identity.
And for some, it shows up without a clear reason at all.
If you’re here, you’re probably not just looking to understand depression.
You want it to feel lighter.
You want your energy back.
You want to feel like yourself again.
You Shouldn’t Have to Relive Everything Just to Feel Better
One of the biggest fears people have about depression therapy is this:
“If I start talking about everything… am I going to have to go through it all again?”
When you’re already struggling just to get through the day, the idea of reopening painful experiences can feel overwhelming.
At Rising Up, we approach this differently.
Healing doesn’t require you to retraumatize yourself.
There are ways to work with what you’re carrying…
ways that help your brain and body process what’s stuck…
without forcing you to relive everything in detail.
A Different Way to Heal Depression
Depression isn’t just in your thoughts.
It’s in your energy.
Your nervous system.
Your emotional patterns.
Your past experiences.
And often, anxiety is right there alongside it.
Racing thoughts, constant worry, overthinking… layered on top of feeling shut down or depleted.
Anxiety and depression often feed each other. One speeds everything up. The other slows everything down.
That’s why we use a combination of approaches that work together to help your system find balance again.
Changing the Voice in Your Head: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Depression often comes with a constant internal narrative:
“I’m not doing enough.”
“I should be better than this.”
“Maybe I don’t deserve to feel better.”
CBT helps you start to see those thoughts for what they are… patterns, not truths.
You’ll learn how to:
recognize self-critical and hopeless thinking
gently challenge the belief that you’re “stuck this way”
shift out of all-or-nothing thinking
build a more supportive internal voice
Over time, that voice softens. And that changes everything.
Creating Stability When Everything Feels Heavy: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Depression can feel like a shutdown… but underneath it, there’s often overwhelm, frustration, and emotional exhaustion.
DBT helps you:
move through emotional lows without completely collapsing
build structure and consistency, even when motivation is low
tolerate discomfort without shutting down or withdrawing
reconnect with daily life in small, manageable ways
This is where things begin to feel a little more steady.
Rewiring What’s Still Affecting You: EMDR
For many people, depression is connected to something specific.
A loss.
A trauma.
A moment or period of life that changed how you see yourself.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps your brain process those experiences so they no longer carry the same emotional weight.
And this is key:
You don’t have to relive everything.
EMDR uses guided eye movements to help your brain reprocess experiences in a way that rewires how they are stored, without needing to go into every detail.
Clients often notice:
memories feel less heavy or consuming
less emotional reactivity tied to past events
more ability to stay present instead of pulled backward
This can be especially powerful for depression connected to grief, or trauma.
Shifting the Heavy Emotions in Your Body: Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
EFT involves gently tapping on specific acupressure points while focusing on what you’re feeling and repeating supportive phrases.
With depression, this can help with something many people struggle to put into words:
The heaviness. The stuckness. The shame.
EFT can help:
reduce emotional intensity
soften feelings of shame and self-blame
create small shifts in energy
reconnect you with your body
And most importantly…
It gives you something to do in those moments when everything feels stuck.
Reconnecting With Yourself: Mindfulness, Meditation, and Breathwork
Depression often pulls you away from yourself.
You may feel disconnected, numb, or like you’re just going through the motions.
Mindfulness helps you gently come back.
You’ll learn how to:
notice what’s happening without judging it
reconnect with your body and breath
create small moments of presence
begin feeling again… at your own pace
These moments may be small. But they matter more than they seem.
When It Starts to Come Together
This work doesn’t change everything overnight.
But something begins to shift.
A moment where your mind feels quieter.
A moment where your body feels a little lighter.
A moment where you laugh… and it surprises you.
It can feel like sunlight starting to come through the clouds.
Then another moment.
And another.
You start remembering what it feels like to be you.
A Structured, Time-Limited Path Forward
At Rising Up, we sometimes describe the program as a kind of “bootcamp”. What we mean is that it’s a structured, proven path where the focus is on teaching you the skills required to heal depression and move forward.
The program typically runs for up to 12 weeks.
Not because we want to limit your time…
But because that’s the amount of time we need to help you:
learn the skills
practice them consistently
build momentum
start reconnecting with your life
create community supports
You’ll attend sessions a few hours a day, a few days a week, in a virtual setting.
This level of immersion helps create change faster than trying to do it alone.
The goal is not to keep you in treatment.
The goal is to help you get back to your life…
the things you care about…
and the people who care about you.
Group Support That Actually Feels Supportive
Depression can feel incredibly isolating.
At Rising Up, treatment happens in structured group settings, along with individual support.
You won’t be placed into a random group.
You’ll be with people who are experiencing similar challenges, which creates:
a sense of connection
shared understanding
a space where you don’t have to explain everything
That connection becomes part of the healing process.
A Virtual Program for Massachusetts Residents
Rising Up is a virtual program, so you can access care from wherever you live in Massachusetts.
If you’re located in or around the Buzzards Bay area, you also have the option to attend sessions from our on-site computer lab, where you can participate virtually while being in a supportive physical space and connecting with staff in person.
